Mary-Louise Zanoni is an author and lawyer. For over three years, she has specialized in issues concerning NAIS (the National Animal Identification System) and related agricultural policies.

Freelance Writing and Research
Ms. Zanoni has over 30 years of experience in academic writing, journalism, and teaching writing. She is available for assignments involving editing, research on legal, environmental, or agricultural-policy subjects, and writing articles on subjects related to restorative/sustainable agriculture. Speaking Engagements
Ms. Zanoni has given dozens of public presentations on academic and policy topics, particularly on NAIS and restorative/sustainable agriculture. For environmental reasons she does not travel by air and prefers to limit surface travel to the Northeast states. However, she is available for presentations in person in the New England and Middle Atlantic regions. She will also make presentations in other geographic areas by video or audio. Ms. Zanoni’s past speaking engagements include:

  • Farmers’ Research Circle. February 2009 presentation to a group of conventional and organic farmers in Columbia County, New York. Cosponsored by the Chatham Real Food Co-op, this visit to the vibrant local-foods community in the Hudson Valley also included an evening talk for the general public.
  • Rural Vermont (a Vermont sustainable-agriculture education and policy group). September 2007, speaker tour including public presentations and meetings with agricultural policymakers and lawmakers.

  • Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group. Annual conference, January 2007, presentation on the principal ways that NAIS will harm sustainable agriculture.

  • Family Farm Defenders (a Wisconsin group working to create a democratically farmer-controlled food system). Annual meeting, April 2007, presentation on the harmful effects of NAIS for family farmers, especially small dairy farmers.

  • National Institute for Animal Agriculture (a corporate-dominated meat and dairy trade group). Annual "ID Expo," August 2006, panel presentation on opposition to NAIS.

  • Northeast Organic Farming Association. Summer conference, August 2006, debate on NAIS with the Massachusetts Commissioner of Agriculture and representatives from the Center for Science in the Public Interest and Food and Water Watch.

Ms. Zanoni offers consulting services such as analysis of policy/legislative initiatives of interest groups, and strategic planning for groups’ approaches to agricultural policy issues.
